No Way in Hell!
I now know why more people haven't attempted to finish "Ye Olde 96er" in the 3 hour time limit..... It's freakin' impossible! It's a sucker bet, and Denny wins every time.
There are claims that Kate and Lori (if you're reading this blog, you know their last names) finished in two hours and 54 minutes.
Do you really believe that they did it?
I'd have to see it.

I don't think so. I think they either purged a few times during the three hours and/or slipped some to a friend and/or Denny's "accidentally forgot" to add a few pounds of beef.
The latter is a stretch. They Denny's people seem pretty honest and I don't think they'd "accidentally" do that for two different people. I saw a few people attempt the 6-pounder a while ago and I have serious doubts that ANYONE can eat that thing!

There is a good deal of evidence to support Denny's claims that Lori Weiss did accomplish what the restaurant claims. Lori Weiss ate the three pound burger in 36 minutes at a contest recorded for the Food Network in 2002, setting a record (which I believe still stands) The archived versions of Denny's websites have two articles about that contest:
Lancaster New Era
Clearfield Progress
I am not sure if this contest was ever televised by the Food Network since I have not been able to find any information about the show it was on. If it was, Lori's appearance might have been cut.
Lori's conquest of the 96er last July was documented in a blog entry at
http://baxojayz.blogspot.com/2005/07/4th-of-july-weekend-dennys-beer-barrel.html
If Lori Weiss' feats are a hoax, they are extremely well constructed ones.

It seems to me that they did accomplish the task. I think Sonya has eaten a burger of similar size in Las Vegas on more than one occasion. That said, Kate claims to have not really prepared for the event. I just can't imagine anyone (Joey included) eating that burger without trying.

i could have told you guys to save the expense of making a trip down there. Its a waste of time. The burger in my opinion sucks. If it was a steak or sirloin burger you would have done alot better . Booker as great an eater as he is had serious problems with it the first time out even though he was 1/4lb away from completing the job ,he ended up getting very sick

it was only and hour and a half from home for me, so not too much expense incurred.
Ian, on the other hand......
Anyway, it's one of those things I just think you have to do.
And we did.
We actually all had enough sense to stop before we got to the point of being sick.
Actually, Ian and I went out after and had a few beers. If he really pushed it, I think he'd of finished as much as Booker, but I commend him for making it more about the experience and not making himself sick.

In "Horsemen of the Esophagus" Kate's mother is quoted as saying how much she hates competitive eating, so parental disapproval has probably been a major factor in Kate's lack of a public followup.
